If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again

If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd build self esteem first, and the house later.
I'd finger paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I'd model less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love.
This is a wonderful poem for parents but it is also true for relationships in general. We get caught up in our daily tasks and forget to show love to those around us. To often we try to control every aspect of our lives that we get upset and even angry if someone does not act how we expect them to or disagrees with us. Life is not all about being in charge, it is about giving God control. We need to slow down and enjoy the life that God has given us. Life is a gift, why would we want to spend our time worrying, criticising, and yelling when God says "The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control" Galatians:5:22,23. How are you living your life?
